Short Story from the Supernatural Christian Romance Mystery Novel series... The Holy One's!
The three bold adventurers raced north towards Last Chance Mountain. Newlyweds Scotty and Verily Fisher followed close behind Inyo the territorial angel of Death Valley. They were in a tight V formation like the Air Force Thunderbirds. The ultra-terrain vehicles danced over dunes and rolling hills. They dodged around sagebrush and house-sized boulders. The voice-activated intercoms in each machine came to life as they reached a high hill that climbed up to their destination.
"We need to stop there at the grave marker next to that boulder shaped like a giant dragon egg," he said slowing down on the mountainside. He stopped and then jumped out of his UTV. He reached back into the cocoon. He placed a white Stetson cowboy hat on his head.
Verily and Scotty got out too, and then they stood silently next to him. He knelt down beside the headstone on one knee. He picked up a handful of sand. The grains slipped through his very long deeply tanned fingers. He began to sing praise to God in a psalm of gratitude. After three minutes the song was done, but its melody seemed to echo throughout the valley. They saw that a storm was brewing. The blue sky was turning to gray. And the winds were kicking up. "Here lies Maria Bella Ventura. She was barely one year old when she was laid to rest here," said Inyo as he stood and placed his big right hand on the old wooden carved grave marker. "She was formed and created in the Spanish house of God in the summer of 1846. She was entrusted to four monks who were Franciscan priests. They were to bring her to the mission at San Buena Ventura, California. They sailed the Atlantic and decided the fastest route to get Maria to her new home would be to cross the new world in a wagon, instead of going around Cape Horn."
Verily's eyes began to tear up and her breathing was getting shorter. Scotty's tears streamed down his cheeks, but he refused to hide his god-given emotions. They held hands as Inyo brought out two folded shovels and then he handed them to the couple. Within a few minutes of digging the hollow thump thump of the shovels on the lid of the large coffin came to their ears. They pried off one board and then another. They were shocked to see not a tiny body, but a beautiful new silver bell. It was 18 inches tall and 18 inches across the opening. Its name 'Maria Bella Ventura' was carved in gothic letters into its side along with the date 1846 and a blessing verse for all who hear it as it praises God.
