Description
Todd Atwood teaches in the Department of Biology at failing Hendricks College in the small town of Eternity, Indiana. Going to work each day entails facing ill-prepared students, a vindictive chairman, and incompetent administrators. After years of receiving student messages such as, "i no you dont let students makeup there quiz but i been sick," Todd has become cynical and is looking for life beyond Hendricks. Social fulfillment is not the answer. A social life is an endangered species in Eternity, especially if you are a bachelor on the faculty at Hendricks. Thus, Todd resorts to sharing the wife of another man. Shortly after settling for wife sharing, Todd accidently discovers that he can teleport objects and people. However, Todd's control over teleportation is a bit iffy, because has difficulty maintaining focus; probably a holdover of his undergraduate days of "better living through chemistry." Nonetheless, he decides to exploit teleportation to regain the feeling of accomplishment that he has lost at Hendricks. Todd needs to ally anonymously with someone who has almost unlimited access to information. His first choice is Mollie Cahill, the current Vice President of the United States. He believes that Mollie might be willing to play outside the box, because she is about to become a political has-been. It is well known that Mollie will be dumped by President Busse, a poster child for what's wrong with education in America. Todd ends up making his pitch for immortality to a naked, disbelieving Vice President. Mollie is quite sure that Todd is mentally disordered, and possibly dangerous. She has no intention of allying with him, until she is faced with the impossible task of rescuing Julie Schellenberg from Evin Prison in Tehran. Neither Mollie nor Todd believes the rescue is possible, even with help from Quinton Ross, the Director of the CIA. Moreover, outside influences conspire to frustrate their best efforts. Mollie has to work around a President that refers to her as the Vice Bitch, and contend with "The Shit," the President's Chief of Staff. Todd is constantly battling his department chairman, and coping with a crumbling love life. And, it turns out that Mollie and Todd face a far more difficult challenge than rescuing Julie.
