Description
In MYRIDDIA: Book One, Oklahoma teen Darrah Brooks is eagerly awaiting her eighteenth birthday. Like most people her age, she's wondering what to do with her life, if her jealous younger sister will ever like her, and if the joint pain she's having lately means she has something weird like Lupus or Lyme disease.
To complicate matters, her parents decide she needs to see a strange letter that was left with her outside their door when she was just a newborn. The letter, from her alleged biological father, claims that he was a King, she will one day be Queen, and that she will have to fight a war against a psycho mass murderer bent on taking over Myriddia, the place where she was supposedly born.
Darrah is pretty sure bio-daddy was a crack addict. She dismisses the letter as all lies -- until Thane and Kine show up, knowing more about her than her life-long friends. They tell her the crazy letter is real. They also tell her the pain in her joints means she's about to shift for the first time into her animal form. She could be a panther, like Thane and Kine, and like her father was, or one of the Sway clan like her biological mother. Thane and Kine also tell her the first time hurts -- a lot.
A near-miss with a couple of would-be Ressa queen-killers convinces Darrah to leave the human plane and go to Myriddia to take her place as its Queen because now she understands if she does not, people in both realms will die.
Once in Myriddia, Darrah discovers new clans of shape-shifters, amazing dream-like landscapes, crazy new foods and languages, hints of emerging powers that are taking everyone by surprise, experience the universal frustration of boy problems, and meets her biological mother's parents for the first time.
Darrah must find acceptance in her new role as Myriddia's Queen and train to become a warrior for people she has only just met, all while fighting the guilt of leaving her human family behind. She is sure she will get back to them, but first, she has to learn how to fight Barut, the dragon-lizard leader of the Ressa, because war is coming, even sooner than she can imagine and no one is safe.
