Description

Over 2000 years ago, the Mount Vesuvius volcano towered 6000 ft. high, being close to the Bay of Naples, it erupted with a powerful explosive force, resulting in the destruction of the cities of Pompeii, along with her sister city, Herculaneum and Stabiae, buried in a pile of volcanic ash , pumice , and molten rock. Notable powerful men in the Roman empire, Julius Caesar, and emperors Augustus and Tiberius owned homes in the seaside resort town of Stabiae. After the initial eruption had ceased, a massive pyroclastic flow cascaded down its slopes toward Herculaneum , causing death and devastation instantaneously to all in its path. In a period of slightly over 24 hours, the entire cities were buried in ash and debris, to be lost to the world for centuries.

Pompeii is the world's largest archaeological and excavation site comprising 150 acres, being well preserved in a suspended time capsule of memorable events in the lives of its citizens. This book is an introduction into the city's origins, the daily activities of the people, details of the Vesuvius eruption, excavations and discoveries, and future restoration plans for modern day Pompeii. Today, over three million people reside in the immediate vicinity of Mount Vesuvius, one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes.
