The Adventures of Irene Adler is a book-puzzle, a book-riddle, a book-mystery. High profile and the most daring crimes are committed right in front of everyone's eyes, leaving the whole world shaking. Following the best traditions of Arsène Lupin.

Chapter 1. A Single Bullet

"What would you do, my friends, if you found yourself surrounded by enemies with a single bullet to spare?" asked Mr. Bloomfield.
He enjoyed bringing tricky questions or ambiguous ideas to boring dinner-table conversations, not to lighten the mood as one might expect, but to place himself in the spotlight and create the impression in society of being an extraordinarily interesting person. But society refused to consider him as such, to which Mr. Bloomfield, for his part, remained oblivious and continued to please everyone with his remarks that were nonetheless occasionally met with unexpected enthusiasm.
"Depends on how many there are," said Mrs. Layton lazily.
"And whether or not they are armed," added Mr. Westwick.
Comments could be heard from both ends of the table.
"Well, if you are surrounded, there must be more than two," a female voice concluded.
"Their number is irrelevant, my friends. But let us suppose there are five," continued Mr. Bloomfield. "And as for weapons, let us explore various scenarios."
"Well, if they are unarmed, one must shoot at the leader. Without a leader any gang or band is doomed," the same female voice suggested.
"Why necessarily a gang or a band? It could be a group of soldiers. In that case, if the commander-in-chief dies, a soldier of a lower rank assumes command."
"Why are we even bothering with the commander-in-chief? They are trying to kill you!"
"No one said anything about murder! You are simply surrounded."
"Yes, but surrounded by enemies! It is obvious they are going to do something to you. All right, so if they do not intend to murder you, then tie you up -- "
"Yes, but... "
"Ladies, ladies! Quiet, please. I believe what Mrs. Layton meant was that a few seconds of confusion among the enemies might give you the opportunity to change the course of events."
"That can only be true if they are unarmed," said Mr. Westwick again in his characteristically uncertain manner. He chewed on his plump lips, which stood out like a bright, red spot on a young, pale face and added: "Otherwise, it would make no difference."
"And what if they are armed?"
"If they are armed, then you might as well shoot yourself!"
Both ends of the table began to debate the scenarios.
"Actually, in my opinion, that would not be the best solution," disagreed Miss Chapman, a straight-laced old maid, who despite having long lost the beauty of her face, still retained an agile mind.
"Still better than being caught and tortured."
"But I thought we were trying to figure out how to stay alive with only one bullet. What has torture got to do with it?"
"I am afraid, you err, Miss Chapman. The question was this: what would you do if you found yourself surrounded by enemies and with only one bullet in your revolver?"
"Then you should express the topic of conversation more precisely, otherwise it remains completely unclear what is it that your enemies wa -- "
"And what time is it, Mr. Bloomfield? Day or night?" a female voice that had been silent up until now inquired loudly.
"What does it matter, Miss Adler?" asked Mr. Bloomfield in surprise.
"It matters a lot!"
"All right. Let it be night."
"Perfect. Then I know exactly how to stay alive surrounded by enemies with only one spare bullet."
Everyone's gaze turned...
