Description

"In the West I met my darling
While in the land of dreams;
We would set off every morning
To visit sights and scenes.

Lady fortune must have found us
Wandering in our time,
And with milk of human kindness
She filled our hearts and minds."

Lyndon N. Smith, who is a long-time resident of Somerset and was born and bred in Britain's West Country, enjoys richly atmospheric things; like ruined abbeys, wild country and coastline, bridges, old castles, disused canals and Cotswold pubs.

Do you also like places that cast a spell on you with their strong associations and invocations?

If so, join Lyndon on a tour of what he calls the 'Wonders of the West'.

Each wonder features a poem, an illustration, and notes by the author.

"Through the enchanting pages of "Wonders of the West," Lyndon N. Smith transports readers to the very centre of the British West Country. From the undulating hills and rocky shores to the ageless charm of its historic castles and charming Cotswold inns, Smith depicts the otherworldly splendour of this place with the spirit of a poet and the vision of an artist.

Through the use of vivid imagery and moving language, each chapter serves as a poetic tribute to the heritage of the area. The milk of human kindness imbues Smith's poetry with a vivid depiction of the landscapes he loves, and the silent stories of artefacts and ruins are brought to life in his drawings.

This is more than just a book of poetry and images; it is an emotional ode to magical and historically significant locations. Smith captures the timeless allure of the West's undiscovered treasures in his work, whether they be the majestic Ironbridge or the peaceful decay of a long-lost monastery.

Anyone longing to delve into the enigmatical West Country will find this book an ideal entrance, not only for history aficionados or poetry enthusiasts. The stories that the passage of time has engraved into the dirt and rock are brought to light through Smith's observations of the ordinary.

An unusual gem, "Wonders of the West" defies categorization and provides an unforgettable adventure. It beckons you to explore, be amazed, and see the eternal beauty of a place that has been a source of inspiration for dreamers and poets for ages."

"Very unique and interesting how this author has taken his love for the British West Country, especially the old ruins and describes them in poetic form. I love the sketches - very well done. I also as a tourist, love to see ancient ruins and learn the history behind them. What a creative way to present one's thoughts about each of these in the form of poetry. The descriptive beauty of the ruins pairs so well with the sketches of them. He calls these "hidden gems" and that they are. I think my favorite was "Ironbridge." A lovely book."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Unique Book

This is no ordinary book. It's a uniquely creative approach to sharing perceptions of ancient structures and ruins through poetry. Inspired by the works of many of the English School of poets, the author created a collection of poems to portray with exquisite detail these wonders of the west country and accompanied them with skillfully done sketches. They speak of mystical castles and majestic kingdoms. If you are fan of ancient structures and are drawn to poetry, you will love this book.
